Stowmarket - Then & Now by Mike Durrant
This completely new book chronicles many of the changes which have taken
place in and around the town, comparing the past with the present. Each
pair of pages consists of two photographs – those on the left depict
what used to be there THEN, and on the right, what is there NOW. Every
photograph is accompanied with a caption providing a brief history of
the site and readers will be surprised just how much change has occurred,
even over the last few years.
The book not only serves as a nostalgic reminder for those who have
spent a lot of their life in the town, but also provides people new to
the area, a glimpse of how things used to look. An emphasis has been
placed on the use of less well known “Then” pictures and
what has been unearthed will also be of a surprise to many.
Having 288 pages, 269 photographs, 4 maps, plus an insert map of the
centre of Stowmarket based on a 19th century plan, this book has been
deliberately styled to compliment Harry Double’s trilogy of books
on Stowmarket and could almost be considered a FOURTH in the series.
“Stowmarket – Then and Now” is a book not to be missed
and may cause sadness for many, showing the destruction of some beautiful
buildings which have been replaced by concrete structures with little
character or appeal, in the name of “progress”.
